AKID Footwear Collection

Jul 22, 2014

Recently I’ve been lovin’ the footwear designs from Los Angeles based brand AKID, created by Ashleigh Dempster and Matt George, which officially launched on March 10, 2014. The couple were inspired to create AKID by their two young boys, a footwear collection made for kids 2-8 years old. And each style of shoe is named after a child the couple knows personally.

Nowadays parents are paying more attention to dressing their kids rather themselves, they spend more on them and the demand for a statement piece is growing. This is where AKID comes in, their thoughtfully designed shoe styles are on trend and not too expensive. The best thing is, all the styles are gender neutral, so you can pass it on to your next child or to a friend. We all know kids grow so fast. The entire shoe line is hand-crafted using the finest leathers, fabrics, and beading sourced from around the world.

I’m quite obsessed with the embossed “snake” slip-ons (Liv) and high-tops (Knight). And how awesome are the Céline-esque pony hair slip-ons (Liv)? So cute right?

“As a mom, I know first-hand the challenges of dressing young children. I want to break away from the typical, but stay practical. I don’t want to fuss around with laces and want high quality products for approachable prices. And, I want my little men to look cool!” George agrees, “We have a finger on the pulse in what works in fashion in terms of colors, design, and fabrics. There is definitely a vacancy in the marketplace for stylish childrenswear, and we feel that AKID fills that void.” AKID plans to expand their line of footwear for kids into other products as the company expands.

It comes at no surprise that Ashleigh Dempster and Matt George created a line of their own, both are influential trendsetters in the world of fashion and the arts. AKID brings Dempster’s high-style fashion sense and George’s streetwear edge to Los Angeles. Dempster co-founded The Society Global, a “virtual cultural club for the creative class” in 2006, and has successfully created and executed events in cities across the United States and Canada within the arts, entertainment, lifestyle and fashion industries. George is owner of well-known names in retail and fashion including Goodfoot, Nomad, St. Alfred, Stüssy Vancouver, Stüssy Toronto, NVSBL Tailors, Ransom, the successful Ransom by Adidas footwear line, and he has been a business consultant to Kanye West, among others.
